The permitted period of stay depends on the visa granted, with short-term visitor categories generally covering stays of up to 90 days. For Indian nationals, visa applications are handled through the Japanese Embassy/Consulates and designated Visa Application Centres in India.

Purpose of the Visitor Visa:

• Tourism: Explore Japan’s cities, cultural attractions, historical sites, and natural landscapes.
• Family & Friends: Visit relatives or acquaintances residing in Japan.
• Short-Term Business Visits: Attend meetings, conferences, negotiations, or other permitted business activities.
• Medical Treatment: Travel to Japan for eligible medical treatment.

Key Eligibility Requirements:

• Intent to Return: Applicants should demonstrate that they intend to leave Japan after their authorized stay.
• Financial Stability: Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover their travel and stay in Japan. Supporting evidence may include bank statements, income certificates, tax documents, or other financial records.
• Valid Passport: Applicants must hold a valid passport and provide the required passport copies.
• Purpose of Visit: Applicants must clearly demonstrate the purpose and planned schedule of their visit.
• Travel Itinerary: A detailed itinerary showing the planned activities, destinations, and accommodation during the stay may be required.

Steps to Apply

1. Complete the Application Form:

   The first step is to complete the Japanese visa application form accurately. Applicants should ensure that the information provided is consistent with their supporting documents and travel plans.

2. Prepare the Required Documents:

   Generally, the following documents may be required:

   • Valid passport
   • Completed and signed visa application form
   • Recent passport-size photograph
   • Passport copies
   • Covering letter explaining the purpose of travel
   • Detailed travel itinerary
   • Flight reservation or planned travel schedule
   • Hotel/accommodation booking
   • Proof of sufficient financial resources
   • Bank statements
   • Income or employment documents
   • Income-tax documents, where applicable
   • Proof of ties to the home country
   • Invitation letter from family or friends in Japan, where applicable
   • Documents relating to the guarantor or sponsor, where applicable
   • Travel history
   • Additional documents depending on the applicant’s profile and purpose of travel.

3. Pay the Visa Fee:

   Applicants must pay the applicable Japanese visa fee. The amount can vary depending on nationality, visa type, and the relevant Japanese diplomatic mission. Applicants should confirm the current fee before submission.

4. Book an Appointment / Submit the Application:

   In India, Japan uses designated Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global for visa application services. VFS Global receives the application and supporting documents, while the actual visa decision is made by Japanese Embassy or Consulate officials.

5. Submit Biometrics and Documents:

   Applicants may be required to provide the necessary biometric information and submit their original passport together with the completed application and supporting documents, depending on the applicable procedure.

6. Wait for Processing:

   After submission, the application is examined by the Japanese diplomatic mission. Processing time can vary depending on the application and circumstances, so applicants should apply sufficiently in advance of their intended travel date.

7. Visa Decision and Passport Collection:

   Once the decision has been made, the applicant can collect or receive the passport according to the procedure selected through the Visa Application Centre.

Multiple-Entry Visitor Visa

Indian nationals may also be eligible for a multiple-entry Temporary Visitor Visa under certain conditions. Japan provides multiple-entry visa procedures for eligible Indian nationals for tourism, business, and visits to relatives or acquaintances. Certain categories can receive a visa with a validity of up to 5 years, with a period of stay of up to 90 days per visit, subject to the applicable eligibility requirements.
