A Visitor Visa for France is generally a Schengen Short-Stay Visa (Type C) for individuals who wish to visit France for tourism, family or friends, business, or other permitted short-term purposes. A short-stay Schengen visa generally allows stays of up to 90 days within 180 days.
Purpose of the Visitor Visa:
- Tourism: Explore France’s cities, historical landmarks, culture, museums, and scenic destinations.
- Family & Friends: Visit family members or friends residing in France.
- Short-Term Business Visits: Attend business meetings, conferences, exhibitions, or other permitted business activities.
- Medical Treatment: Travel to France for eligible short-term medical treatment.
Key Eligibility Requirements:
- Intent to Return: Applicants must demonstrate that they intend to leave France and the Schengen Area before the visa expires, supported by their personal, professional, and financial circumstances.
- Financial Stability: Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover their stay and return journey. Supporting documents may include bank statements, salary slips, employment documents, income-tax documents, or sponsorship documents.
- Valid Passport: The passport must meet the Schengen validity requirements, including remaining valid for at least three months after the intended departure from the Schengen Area.
- Travel Medical Insurance: Applicants should provide appropriate travel medical insurance covering the Schengen Area for the duration of the trip.
- Proof of Accommodation: Applicants should provide evidence of accommodation, such as hotel reservations or appropriate accommodation documentation.
- Purpose of Travel: Applicants must provide documents supporting the reason and itinerary of their visit.
Steps to Apply

Complete the Application:
The first step is to use the official France-Visas portal to determine the appropriate visa type and complete the online application process. The France-Visas Visa Wizard also provides information about the supporting documents required for the applicant’s situation.

Generally, the following documents may be required:
- Valid passport
- Completed and signed visa application
- Recent passport-size photographs
- Personal covering letter
- Travel itinerary
- Flight reservation
- Proof of accommodation
- Proof of financial means
- Bank statements
- Salary slips and employment documents, where applicable
- Income-tax documents, where applicable

Pay the Visa Fee:
The standard Schengen short-stay visa fee is currently EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6–12. Additional Visa Application Centre service charges may apply.

Book an Appointment:
Applicants in India must submit their applications through the designated visa application process. VFS Global is the authorized service provider for France in India, while the final visa decision remains with the relevant French consular authorities.

Biometric Submission:
Applicants may be required to provide fingerprints and a photograph as part of the Schengen visa application process.

Submit the Application:
Attend the appointment with the completed application, passport, supporting documents, and required biometrics. Applications submitted in India are examined by the relevant French consulates or the visa section of the French Embassy in Delhi.

Wait for Processing:
Applicants should submit their application sufficiently in advance to allow time for appointment availability and processing. France-Visas states that short-stay applications should generally be submitted at least 15 days before the planned visit, while applications cannot normally be submitted more than 6 months before departure.

Visa Decision and Passport Collection:
Once a decision has been made, applicants will be notified regarding the collection or return of their passport.
Important Note:
A French Schengen short-stay visa is intended for temporary visits. If France is your only destination, you may apply through the French authorities; if you are visiting several Schengen countries, France should generally be your main destination in terms of duration or purpose.
