A Visitor Visa for Germany is generally a Schengen Visa (Category C) for individuals who wish to visit Germany for tourism, family or friends, or other short-term purposes. For stays of up to 90 days, applicants from visa-required countries need a Schengen visa. Indian citizens require a visa to enter Germany.
Purpose of the Visitor Visa:
- Tourism: Explore Germany’s cities, historical landmarks, culture, and scenic destinations.
- Family & Friends: Visit family members or friends residing in Germany.
- Short-Term Business Visits: Attend business meetings, conferences, or other permitted short-term business activities.
- Medical Treatment: Travel to Germany for eligible short-term medical treatment.
Key Eligibility Requirements:
- Intent to Return: Applicants should demonstrate that they intend to leave the Schengen Area before their authorized stay ends, supported by their personal, professional, and financial circumstances.
- Financial Stability: Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial means for their stay. Supporting evidence can include bank statements, salary slips, employment documents, income-tax documents, or sponsorship documents.
- Valid Passport: The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, remain valid for at least 3 months after the scheduled departure from the Schengen Area, and contain at least two blank pages.
- Travel Medical Insurance: Applicants must have travel medical insurance valid throughout the Schengen Area and for the entire trip, with minimum medical coverage of EUR 30,000.
Steps to Apply

Complete the Application Form:
The first step is to complete the Schengen visa application through the VIDEX online application system. The completed application must be printed and submitted with the required barcode pages. Applicants must also sign the required declarations.

Prepare the Required Documents:
Generally, the following documents are required:
- Valid passport
- Copy of the biometric and address page of the passport
- Recent biometric passport photograph
- Completed and signed Schengen visa application
- Personal covering letter
- Travel itinerary and intended means of transportation
- Flight reservation
- Proof of accommodation, such as hotel reservation or other appropriate accommodation documentation
- Proof of financial means
- Bank statements
- Salary slips and employment documents, where applicable
- Income-tax documents, where applicable
- Proof of ties to the home country
- Travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000
- Proof of civil status, where applicable
- Invitation and sponsorship documents, where applicable
- Additional documents depending on the applicant’s profile and purpose of travel.

Pay the Visa Fee:
Applicants must pay the applicable Schengen visa fee. The applicable fee and any additional Visa Application Centre service charges should be checked at the time of application.

Book an Appointment:
Applicants can submit their Schengen visa application through a designated Visa Application Centre. German Missions in India use VFS Global for Schengen visa application submission. Applicants should schedule an appointment and submit the required documents and biometrics as applicable.

Biometric Submission:
Applicants may be required to provide fingerprints and a photograph as part of the Schengen visa application process.

Wait for Processing:
Applications are generally processed within 15 working days after reaching the visa section. Applicants should allow additional time for the transfer of applications between the Visa Application Centre and the German Mission.

Visa Decision and Passport Collection:
Once a decision has been made, applicants will be notified regarding the outcome and passport collection or return.
Important Note:
A German Schengen Visa is intended for short stays of up to 90 days. If you plan to stay in Germany for more than 90 days, a German National Visa (D Visa) is generally required instead.
For applications from India, the German Missions also state that submitting the required documents does not guarantee visa approval, and incomplete documentation may result in rejection.
